The squad leader gave the group purpose, communicating orders from command as well as mission objectives and targets. It was also his responsibility to meet the needs of his teammates ensuring that ammunition and other necessary supplies were made available as needed whilst ensuring the safety of his squad on the battlefield.

The military strength of the German Army was managed through mission-based tactics (Auftragstaktik) rather than detailed order-based tactics, and rigid discipline. Once an operation began, whether offensive or defensive, speed of response to changing circumstances was considered more important than careful planning and co-ordination of new plans. Particular focus was given to encouraging subordinates to use their initiative and to react to developments on the battlefield.

In 1942, to meet the high demand for uniforms, the felbluse (field tunic) was modified again to save on materials and production time, and was seen in use until the end of the war.
