The Chauchat was the standard light machine gun of the French Army during World War 1. It entered service in June 1916 and was carried and fired by a single operator and an assistant. It set a precedent being a portable, yet full-power automatic weapon built inexpensively and in very large numbers. The principal role of the Chauchat in the French infantry section was to provide a mobile barrage during an advance.
