The colour of the infantry uniform of the Austro-Hungarian Army changed to field grey in September 1915 and began to gradually phase out the existing pike grey uniforms. From May 1917 the Austrian M17 helmet was introduced, which was similar to the German M1916 Stahlhelm. The equipment carried by soldiers also decreased towards the end of the war as increased mobility in assaults was prioritised, especially for assault battalions.
