Pike-grey uniforms were the standard of Austro-Hungarian soldiers at the beginning of the war. Red lanyards were worn by those with marksman qualifications, and the equipment of a soldier from 1914-1917 generally consisted of a horse skin rucksack, rolled greatcoat, and canvas provisions bag.
